Young couple discussing purchasing a new kids ride-on carThanks for taking the time to read this article on the 10 Things I Wish I Knew Before Buying A Kids Electric Car.

With any luck, this will help you in your journey to purchasing a new ride-on for your child, grandchild, niece or nephew.

Some of these are shockingly obvious while others may be surprising. They are ordered by importance—what I would most want to know before making a purchase.

Just remember, all retail websites are different and what they do or don’t cover can vary significantly.

This guide is written assuming you’ll be purchasing from RiiRoo. If you’re buying from another retailer, please contact them directly if you're unsure about anything.

1. How to Look After the Battery

Here’s the list of things to do after purchase:

  • The battery and motors are the most expensive parts of the toy.
  • Charge the battery for the recommended time—never more than 24 hours!
  • Charge the battery every 3 weeks, even in long-term storage.
  • Inspect the battery monthly for leakage or loose cables.
  • Avoid undercharging—it shortens battery life.
  • Don’t store the toy in cold or damp environments.
  • Don’t use the ride-on if the battery voltage drops below the specified rating.

2. The Different Voltages

There are several voltage options: 6V, 12V, 24V, and even 36V. This article explains the differences.

Higher voltage doesn’t always mean more power. What really matters is battery efficiency and runtime.

Higher voltage models tend to be pricier and may include dual batteries, especially at 24V and above.

3. The Size

Product images can be misleading—check the toy’s measurements before buying.

RiiRoo provides size info in the "Dimensions and Weights" section of each product page. Use this to plan where you’ll store or use the toy and compare it with your child’s size.

Some ride-ons appear to be two-seaters but only have one seat with dual headrests for aesthetics. Use RiiRoo’s filters to find true two-seaters.

4. Colours & Pricing

Not all colours are available for every model, and prices can vary by colour.

Popular colours like black, white, pink, and blue may be more expensive due to higher demand.

5. The Finish Isn’t Silky Smooth

All ride-on cars/motorbikes have fabricated plastic bodies that often include minor imperfections.

This is standard across the industry and not unique to RiiRoo.

6. How To Clean

Don’t use water directly or get motors/components wet—they’re not waterproof.

Use a damp cloth followed by a dry one. Avoid harsh chemicals, which may damage the finish.

7. Delivery

Next-day delivery is suggested but not guaranteed. Third-party courier variables like weather and availability can affect timing.

However, most RiiRoo customers receive next-day delivery if ordered before 1PM.

8. I Could Personalise The Number Plate

Some retailers charge for personalised number plates. RiiRoo offers this service for free—be sure to check before you buy.

9. I Could Purchase An Extended Warranty

Batteries aren’t covered by manufacturer warranties. RiiRoo offers an extended battery warranty covering one replacement within 12 months.

Other retailers may not offer this or may have different terms—check before purchasing.

10. That Most Had Media Players

Many ride-ons come with built-in media players. Features may include:

  • Bluetooth connectivity
  • FM radio
  • Preset sounds
  • USB input
  • SD card slot

So there you have it—the 10 things I wish I knew before purchasing a ride-on toy.
