Our Thoughts on the New Lamborghini Countach 2022

The spaciousness has returned. Hall + Oates are back. And it's only natural that the Lamborghini Countach would be resurrected.

Today, Lamborghini unveiled a reimagined, contemporary version of the nameplate. It's nearly as good looking as the original. That isn't faint praise. Our Thoughts on the New Lamborghini Countach 2021

Lamborghini has announced the return of its Countach, a legendary supercar that was built between 1974 and 1990 but is best known for its over-the-top, cheesy Fat Elvis era in the 1980s.

Those later years were a blur of wings and strakes and bulges (literally) glued onto the original shape.

Here in 2021, Lamborghini could have hooked a car battery up to a Don Johnson wig, added some wheels, and given us all a momentary bump of retweetable nostalgia. Instead, and thank god, the design team chose to celebrate the original 1974 Countach's truly mamma-mia design.

Designed by Marcello Gandini

The Lamborghini Countach, designed by Marcello Gandini of the Bertone design house and dubbed "The Penelope," shocked audiences with its simplicity.

The planar surfaces (such as a Lake Como front end) blended into lines drawn by a calligrapher with flair. From nose to tail, there was an unbroken arc. An undulating hip line emerged from the back of the car. There were two flourishes on the rear wheel arch.

Take a look at the new Countach LPI 800-4, and while there are a few more harsh angles—the wheel arches reflect Lamborghini's recent interest in hexagons—you can see that Gandini's magic is still present. (Of course, you can also see the scissor doors.)

The shape was created by Giorgetto Giugiaro, the same man who designed the original Countach.

The Power

Underneath the carbon-fibre exterior is a hybrid system based on Lamborghini's Sian model: a large V-12 engine teamed with a tiny electric motor. They produce around 800 horsepower collectively.

It'll do 0-60 in 2.8 seconds and have a top speed of 220 miles per hour if you must know ;)

A supercapacitor unit powers the electric motor, which is said to deliver three times more power than a conventional lithium-ion battery of comparable size.

This will be Lamborghini's final use of this technology in a production vehicle, with replacements for the Aventador, Huracán, and Urus on the way using more conventionally hybridised powertrains with greater potential for significantly reduced emissions and engine-off running.

Upgraded versions of the Huracán Performante, the Aventador Roadster, and Urus, as well as the superlative Lamborghini Centenario LP770-4 SuperVeloce, will all feature this technology.

It's called EVO Power Plus because it "enables a cleaner driving experience by smoothing out acceleration curves and offering drivers a subtle power boost at their command," according to Lamborghini.

It also allows for motive assistance in low-speed manoeuvres and assists in smoother engine operation.

The profile is inspired by the various Countach models built throughout the vehicle's nearly 20-year history, with distinctive sharp lines and angles emphasised.

The 2021 Countach will be the last of its breed, as it is with the original Countach. The majority of us will enjoy the 2021 version in poster form only.

With its distinctively imagined fascia, the Aventador's front end is where the most significant modifications have been made.

The aggressive visage of the original has given way to a cleaner, less cluttered appearance with simple near-rectangular headlights and a clearly defined bonnet.

The minimalist design is carried over to the uninterrupted roofline, with engine air intakes incorporated into vehicle rear haunches.

The twin air scoops on the front fenders are a reference to the original car, which were then used to supply air to a pair of side-mounted radiators in a F1-inspired setup.

A more subtle historical allusion is present at the top: a clearly defined recess runs down the length of the roof, a reference to Countach models' revolutionary 'periscopa' rear-view mirror.

The Lamborghini bull's head badge, which is a hexagon design, appears on the hood and front splitter.

The brake light clusters, teledial-style wheel designs, and transparent engine cover louvres are all decorated with the Lamborghini trademark hexagon motif.

A concept of the future, with cutting-edge features like movable 3D-printed air vents and a photochromic roof panel that alters from transparent to opaque upon request, serves as a reminder that despite its vintage origins, the Countach is "a 21st-century automobile screensaver."

The interior, on the other hand, pays homage to the original Countach with geometric stitching, but it's still quite close to the Aventador.

Modern features include an 8.4in infotainment touchscreen with smartphone mirroring capability and contemporary accouterments such as an 8.4in touch-screen display with smartphone integration.

The Countach has a power-to-weight ratio of 503bhp per tonne, owing to the fact that it is made entirely of carbon fiber.

The material is left exposed in certain areas, but numerous heritage paint alternatives are available, including Bianco Siderale seen here, Verde Medio and Bronzo Zante.

The Countach LPI 800-4 was "one of the most significant and exciting cars in automotive history" according to Mitja Borkert, Lamborghini's Centro Stile design division head.

"It was extremely polarizing and provocative," he stated. "The Countach was both endearing and frightening, making people smile while simultaneously staring at it. However, its notorious familiarity demonstrates the purity of its design heritage.

The Countach LPI 800-4 raises the bar even higher, with an exclusive limited edition to commemorate it in automotive history."

Lamborghini is producing just 112 examples, and most of them will have been purchased by loyal clients already.

They'll be able to drive around in maybe the slimmest Lamborghini design in decades. In a white suit with shoulder pads, if possible?

Did you have a poster of the Countach on your bedroom wall as a kid? Come on, we all did :)
